Show HN: RMOTR Notebooks – Free Online Data Science Environment Hello HN. We're happy to show to the world a platform that we've created to help our students get started with Data Science: https://ift.tt/2Q0DRo2 We know how hard it is to start working with Data Science tools: setting up local environment, installing dependencies, keeping projects organized, etc. RMOTR Notebooks has Jupyter Lab already preinstalled + the ability to upload datasets. Our platform is now open to everybody for free, and we are thinking about adding paid tiers in the future with better hardware, GPU support, pro features, etc. We've also worked on a "publishing view" for project; so people can share their work with the world: https://ift.tt/2RpHAZ1... Would love to hear your feedback. November 30, 2018 at 01:54AM

Show HN: NET Core for CPanel (NexusCore) As .NET Core (dotnet core) is slowly gaining traction under startups and larger entities I decided to build a plugin for the well-known hosting control panel cPanel (or WHM). My personal belief is that .NET Core is a great investment for companies, and I want to help out the ecosystem by providing an easy way for companies to host their .net core applications without having to do all the plumbing themselves. NexusCore is targetted at (shared) webhosting companies, developers, enthusiasts and other people who love .net core. This plugin (NexusCore) allows you to set up .NET Core hosting packages within the hosting panel, basically allowing you to host the LAMP-stack for customers as well as .NET Core accounts. As I'm a developer, it also helps me host small web apps for clients. NexusCore is available in a freemium license model, you can host up to 5 accounts with the free license (forever), and if you need more clients we offer premium licenses. Note: I'm not affiliated with Microsoft and/or cPanel Inc but a third party developer sharing my love for the .net core product lines. https://nexuscore.io November 29, 2018 at 04:42PM

This Weekend: Holiday Vibes Spread Across the City

This Weekend: Holiday Vibes Spread Across the City
By Schad Dalton

Weekend T Third Line Bus Substitutions:
In anticipation of the new Golden State Warriors’ Chase Center and the growth in jobs, housing, healthcare and retail in the Mission Bay, the SFMTA is constructing a new center platform along Third Street between South and 16th streets. This weekend beginning Friday, November 30 at 7 p.m. through early Monday, December 3, continuing work on the platform will again require bus substitution on a portion of the K/T: K Ingleside/T Third Line. K Ingleside trains will operate from Balboa Park to Embarcadero Station. T Third buses will travel from Spear & Market to Bayshore Boulevard and Sunnydale Avenue. For more information please check out our project page.

Events: There will be plenty of fun, holiday-themed activities this weekend all around the city. Saturday will feature the Union Street Fantasy of Lights in Cow Hollow, Dogpatch will host a holiday block party, cyclists can race (and shop) for a good cause beginning on the Embarcadero during the Supermarket Street Sweep, and the Italian Christmas Market opens up for the weekend at Fort Mason. Read more about our featured events below.

Street Sweep Starting Line 2010

Supermarket Street Sweep

Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Embarcadero

The annual Supermarket Street Sweep returns to the Embarcadero for its 13th year in support of the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank. Over its history, close to 2,000 participants in total have biked around the city to local supermarkets and brought back over 87,000 pounds (more than 43 tons!) to date to donate to the SF-Marin Food Bank. Anyone interested in contributing to this great cause is invited to bring a backpack, bag, crate or whatever they normally use to carry groceries while on their bike, whatever amount of cash is comfortable (for the shopping portion, of course), and to be prepared to race around town in support of needy local families.

How to Get There on Muni: If you aren't riding a bike to the starting line, the E Embarcadero Line, K Ingleside/T Third or N Judah lines will take riders close to the race start on Embarcadero at Folsom. Additionally, riders may take any of the Market Street bus routes, the 14 Mission or 14R Mission Rapid routes to their respective terminals in downtown near the Embarcadero.

Muni Service Notes: There are no planned service changes for this event.

Union Street Fantasy of Lights

Saturday, 3 to 7 p.m.
Cow Hollow

An annual tradition in the Cow Hollow neighborhood, Saturday's Union Street Fantasy of Lights celebrates the arrival of the holiday season as its beautiful Victorian homes are adorned with festive decorations and thousands of holiday lights. Stretching along Union Street between Van Ness Avenue and Steiner Street as well as along Fillmore Street between Union and Lombard streets, the festival will also feature horse-drawn carriage rides from 3-5:30 p.m., ponies dressed up as Santa's reindeer (the real ones are busy preparing for a busy night later in the month!), live entertainment and much more for young and old and everyone in between.

How to Get There on Muni: Riders may take the 19 Polk, 22 Fillmore, 28 19th Avenue, 30 Stockton, 43 Masonic, 45 Union/Stockton, 47 Van Ness, 49 Van Ness/Mission or the 76X Marin Headlands Express routes to the Cow Hollow area.

Muni Service Notes: There are no planned service changes for this event, though routes in the area may see higher than usual ridership or minor delays near Union or Fillmore streets due to increased pedestrian activity.

Remember that you can take Muni the entire day for a single $5 fare. The new $5 Day Pass, available on MuniMobile®, is part of Muni’s recent fare changes. The pass is intended to encourage a safe, convenient way to pay your fare and quickly board Muni vehicles, which reduces overall travel time for everyone. The $5 Day Pass is Muni bus, rail and historic streetcars only.

“On Tap” gives you a heads up about the big events in town and what Muni routes and lines will get you to the party. Look for this feature to be posted usually on Thursdays for a look ahead to the weekend. Check out our Weekend Traffic & Transit Advisory for more details.

SFMTA Testing New Parking Meters

SFMTA Testing New Parking Meters
By Ethan Veneklasen

New parking meters on Post Street.

You may have seen them on Cortland in Bernal Heights, Post Street in the Tenderloin, Oak Street in Hayes Valley or the parking lot at Geary and 21st Avenue…large cylinders sitting on top of the old parking meter poles.

The SFMTA is testing new meters as part of our efforts to stay up to date on the latest technology and make the process of paying for parking as smooth and convenient as possible for our customers.

We are testing 100 of these meters to see how drivers like them and how they stand up to real-world conditions in different parts of the city. The test meters feature a larger screen and also claim to have longer battery life, more efficient solar-power technology and better resistance to jamming and other types of vandalism.

This test will help us evaluate new meter technologies as the SFMTA prepares for its next procurement of meters when the current meter contract expires in January 2021.

If you use one of those new meters, let us know what you think!  Email us at Kenya.Wheeler@sfmta.com  or tweet us @SFMTA_Muni

Thanksgiving Weekend: Macy's Great Tree Lighting and "Snowvember" on Treasure Island

Thanksgiving Weekend: Macy's Great Tree Lighting and "Snowvember" on Treasure Island
By Schad Dalton

T Third Line Bus Substitutions This Sunday: In anticipation of the new Golden State Warriors’ Chase Center and the growth in jobs, housing, healthcare and retail in the Mission Bay, the SFMTA is constructing a new center platform along Third Street between South and 16th streets. This Sunday, November 25, work on the platform will require bus substitution on a portion of the KT: K Ingleside/T Third line. K Ingleside trains will operate from Balboa Park to Embarcadero Station. T Third Buses will travel from Spear & Market to Bayshore Boulevard and Sunnydale Avenue. For more information please check out our project page.

29th Annual Macy’s Great Tree Lighting

Friday, 6 p.m.
Union Square

San Francisco’s most recognized Christmas tree stands more than 83-feet tall, decorated with more than 33,000 twinkling energy-efficient LED lights and 1,100 shining ornaments. It will be officially lit this Friday, November 23 during the 29th annual Macy's Great Tree Lighting in Union Square. Attendees can also look forward to musical performances by Oscar and Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Darlene Love performing music from her Christmas albums, as well as students from American Conservatory Theater’s renowned Young Conservatory,  the San Francisco Boys Chorus, Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir and the cast of Mary Poppins from the San Francisco Playhouse.

How to Get There on Muni: Riders may take any Muni Metro line to the Powell or Montgomery stations, the F Market and Wharves Line, the Powell Cable Car lines, any Market Street bus route as well as the 2 Clement, 3 Jackson, 8 Bayshore, 27 Bryant, 30 Stockton, 38 Geary, 38R Geary Rapid, or 45 Union/Stockton routes to near Union Square.

Muni Service Notes: The Powell Cable Car lines will be substituted by bus shuttles along Powell Street, and the 2, 3, 38, and 38R will have reroutes in the area of the event.

“Snovember” Treasure Island

Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Treasure Island

After you've stuffed yourself on Thanksgiving (and taken Friday to recover!), head over to Treasure Island for the final TreasureFest of the 2018 season. While snowfall is a rarity in the Bay Area, the folks on Treasure Island will have 20 tons of the white stuff ready to create a winter wonderland for all in attendance. Along with the usual shopping and food and drink provided by dozens of local vendors, there will also be an appearance by Santa himself, who will be happy to take down any Christmas wish lists in between posing for free photos.

How to Get There on Muni: The 25 Treasure Island Route is the best option for traveling to and from this temporary winter wonderland.

Muni Service Notes: There are no planned service changes for this event, though ridership to and from the island may be higher than usual.

Upcoming Holiday Service Schedule and Parking Enforcement Alert:

Thanksgiving Day

On Thanksgiving Day (November 22), Muni will operate on a Sunday schedule.

There will be no enforcement of parking restrictions for:

  • Seven-day street sweeping;
  • Parking meters (including those meters on Port of San Francisco property);
  • Residential parking permits;
  • Monday through Friday street sweeping;
  • Commute hour tow-away

Black Friday

On “Black Friday,” November 23, Muni will operate on a regular weekday schedule, though there will be no express bus service with the exception of the 8AX Bayshore A Express and 8BX Bayshore B Express routes.

Parking enforcement will be as follows:

  • Enforced: Seven-day street sweeping restrictions and parking meters (including those meters on Port of San Francisco property).
  • Not Enforced: Residential parking permits, Monday through Friday street sweeping, and commuter tow-away restrictions.

For complete parking enforcement details, visit the holiday enforcement schedule webpage. For complete details on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday Muni service, visit sfmta.com/thanksgiving

SFMTA and Supervisor Kim Switch On Safety at 6th and Jessie

SFMTA and Supervisor Kim Switch On Safety at 6th and Jessie
By Ben Jose

75 percent of traffic crashes in San Francisco are concentrated on just 13 percent of the city’s streets, called the San Francisco “High-Injury Network.”

Today, District 6 Supervisor Jane Kim joined the SFMTA Signal Shop to activate a new traffic signal at the intersection of 6th and Jessie streets, which has been on that network of high-injury streets for too long.

In support of the city’s Vision Zero goal to eliminate traffic deaths in San Francisco, the intersection has been transformed from an unsignaled, mid-block crossing, to a safer place for pedestrians. Work recently completed includes:

  • A new traffic signal system with audible pedestrian signals,
  • High visibility crosswalks, and;
  • New street lighting

In the past five years, the intersection had six reported pedestrian crashes and was quickly identified as a candidate for range of traffic safety improvements. As part of the broader 6th Street corridor, which has the City’s highest rate of traffic collisions, the safety improvements are a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

New street light at 6th and Jessie

The safer crossing benefits everyone in the community, from small business owners and visitors, to long-time residents and at-risk populations, including people with disabilities and the homeless.

Design and construction for all the improvements cost $620,000 and was funded by the Proposition A Transportation General Obligation Bond funds, approved by San Franciscans in 2014.

San Francisco Launches Third Year of Motorcycle Education Campaign Pilot

San Francisco Launches Third Year of Motorcycle Education Campaign Pilot
By

Motorcycle driving through intersection.

San Francisco residents, commuters and visitors will see significant movement toward safe streets as the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) continues another year of work on a first of its kind Vision Zero education campaign targeting people who ride motorcycles. Funding for the campaign is provided by a $100,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The program’s third year will build off the success of the last two years, which saw motorcycle injuries decrease by 12 percent and motorcycle fatalities decline by 50 percent, compared to the year before the program began, according to an analysis by the San Francisco Department of Public Health. However, there is more work to do to reach the City’s goal of zero deaths and severe injuries on our roads.

San Francisco is experiencing an increase in motorcycle usage. According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, there were 22,511 registered motorcycles in San Francisco in 2014, which is an increase in registered motorcycles over five years. With this increase, San Francisco has seen more motorcycle crashes resulting in injury and death. The Office of Traffic Safety database ranks San Francisco as having the highest fatal collision rate among California cities over 250,000 in population and fifth among all counties in the State. Twenty percent of all traffic fatalities in San Francisco in 2017 involved motorcycles despite them accounting for a small fraction of total road users.

To stem these fatalities, the SFMTA will continue to work in direct partnership with the San Francisco Police Department and the San Francisco Department of Public Health to implement a citywide education campaign aimed at reducing and ending injuries and deaths among people who ride motorcycles. As part of the city’s Vision Zero Education Strategy, this campaign will be used to educate the targeted population and implement a spectrum of prevention measures intended to alter individual behaviors that most contribute to crashes, including unsafe speed, unsafe passing and DUI.

The campaign was developed in support of Vision Zero, San Francisco’s policy to eliminate all traffic-related deaths. Every year, about 30 people lose their lives and over 200 more are seriously injured while traveling on city streets. These deaths and injuries are preventable, and San Francisco is committed to stopping further loss of life.

Vision Zero – San Francisco adopted Vision Zero as a policy in 2014, committing to build better and safer streets, educate the public on traffic safety, enforce traffic laws, and adopt policy changes that save lives. The result of this collaborative, citywide effort is safer, more livable streets as San Francisco works towards the Vision Zero goal of zero traffic fatalities by 2024. San Francisco is engineering inherently safer streets, enforcing traffic laws more effectively, and targeting traffic-safety education to reach its Vision Zero goals.

Office of Traffic Safety – The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) strives to eliminate traffic deaths and injuries. It does this by making available grants to local and state public agencies for programs that help them enforce traffic laws, educate the public in traffic safety, and provide varied and effective means of reducing fatalities, injuries and economic losses from collisions.

New Bikeways and Walkways on Townsend Street

New Bikeways and Walkways on Townsend Street
By Ben Jose

New, protected bikeways and walkways are now taking shape on Townsend Street, between 5th and 7th streets.

Over the next few weeks, people traveling to, from or through the Caltrain Station area will see (and get to use!):

  • New, parking-protected bikeways and walkways between 5th and 7th streets
  • An updated parking layout (replacing the back-in angled parking with standard parallel parking)
  • More visible intersections and upgraded crosswalks
  • Better placed zones for uses like tour bus loading, motorcycle parking and bike share stations

Rendering of Townsend, 5th to 7th streets

Project rendering of Townsend Street between 5th and 7th streets

After starting work this month, city crews have been quickly working on the SFMTA’s Townsend Corridor Improvement Project. Work recently completed as of today includes removing the old asphalt and repaving. Over the next several weeks, final work for this stretch of Townsend will include re-striping, sign and parking meter installation and the creation of green, separated bike lanes.

See below for a photo gallery of our city crews in action!

Construction from 3rd to 5th streets begins in 2019

After completing the improvements between 5th and 7th streets, the next step for the Townsend Corridor Improvement Project will be to start work between 3rd and 5th streets. The heaviest lift, of course, will be construction in front of the Caltrain Station (Townsend between 4th and 5th streets.) Work will be coordinated across multiple public agencies and transportation providers to minimize inconveniencing the public during construction as much as possible.

Starting in 2019, work will begin to install a new boarding island and walkway in front of the station, coupled with an updated street layout to discourage double-parking and create a more organized roadway for everyone.

A critical addition between 3rd and 5th streets will be a new boarding island. Designed to create dedicated spaces for the various passenger pick-up and drop-off activities happening at Caltrain, the boarding island will also serve the much-needed dual functions as both a walkway and physical separation between people biking, traffic and people walking.

Rendering of Townsend Street between 4th and 5th streets

Project rendering of Townsend Street between 4th and 5th streets.

As the city works to finalize construction timing and work phasing, we’ll be notifying neighbors, commuters, businesses and the broader public about what to expect and how to plan accordingly.

To receive future e-mail updates about Townsend construction, please sign up for e-mail updates.

Mayor Breed Declares Muni Free Tomorrow Due to Bad Air Conditions

Mayor Breed Declares Muni Free Tomorrow Due to Bad Air Conditions
By Paul Rose

New LRV4 passing older Breda LRV on Market Street

San Francisco’s air quality has moved from red or “unhealthy” to purple or “very unhealthy” due to local wildfires and weather patterns. The Department of Public Health highly recommends that everyone stay indoors and avoid exposure to the outside air. As a result Mayor London Breed requested that all Muni service be free tomorrow, Friday, November 16th, to ensure that all people have access to enclosed transportation during this time.

“By making Muni free, we are allowing people who might need to travel to a respite center, to work or to another destination to have access to transportation without having to expose themselves to smoke outside for a long period of time,” said Ed Reiskin, SFMTA Director of Transportation. “We are also doing everything we can to protect our employees by ensuring they have the resources they need to be as safe as possible.”

Passengers are permitted to board without a transfer and should not tag the Clipper readers. On Friday, November 16, Muni will be operating on a non-school weekday schedule and Cable Car service will be provided by bus shuttles

Fresh Views of 1978 San Francisco

Fresh Views of 1978 San Francisco
By Jeremy Menzies

The SFMTA Photo Archive has just released a new set of archival images from the late 1970s. Taken by the Muni photography staff, these 1978 images were recently digitized and many have never before been seen online. 1978 was a tumultuous year in American history— and in particular for San Francisco— but these images show that it was not all bad news in the late 1970s.

Among the highlights, the inaugural run of the first light rail vehicle in the Muni Metro subway was a big achievement for San Francisco’s Transit First policy.

Although a popular publicity event that included a photo opportunity with Mayor George Moscone driving a Boeing train through the subway, this first 1978 Market Street subway train run was largely ceremonial. Muni’s earliest light rail trains did not go into service until the spring of 1979, and even then there was only partial operation on a K Ingleside shuttle from West Portal to Balboa Park. The full operation of the Muni Metro subway and surface light rail system began in February of 1980.

The year 1978 also marked the 100-year anniversary of the California Street cable car line, which had originally been part of the California Street Cable Railroad Company established in 1878. Muni’s Cable Car Division made sure to celebrate the centennial anniversary with Cable Car 60, a California line original built in 1907. By 1978, this cable car had already undergone extensive restoration during the 1960s, and had been renumbered from 16 to 60.

Additionally, in 1978, Muni undertook a brief photography campaign on behalf of Mayor Moscone’s ‘Storefront Project.’ Although the specific details of this project are lost to time, these photographs have been preserved and show everyday views of life on the streets of San Francisco, including pedestrians on Mission Street, a grocer in the Haight, and a hardware store in the Bayview.

Check out these great photos and many more from 1978 San Francisco at the SFMTA Photo Archive online. The full historic image collection available online now spans 75 years from 1903 to 1978. If you’re still looking for more, get a daily dose of San Francisco photos by following us on Instagram.

Embarcadero Lights Usher in the Holidays

Embarcadero Lights Usher in the Holidays
By Schad Dalton

Twin Peaks Tunnel Weekend Overnight Closures

This weekend will be the last of two planned temporary overnight closures to the Twin Peaks Tunnel including West Portal and Forest Hill stations. These closures are similar to those on previous weekends and only in effect when ridership is low, late at night and early in the morning. Bus shuttles will be provided for the KLM lines and will run while additional work is done. Neighbors should expect minimal disruptions as most activity will be inside the tunnel. For more details, please visit our project page.

Events: Another exciting holiday season is quickly approaching, but this weekend will be relatively quiet with just one big event taking place in the City. The lone bright spot (and we do mean bright) will be the Embarcadero Lighting ceremony on Friday. If you’re looking for other fun activities around the City (or the greater Bay Area), be sure to review these event calendars to discover what’s going on near you this weekend: FunCheapSFEventBriteSF Weekly and SFGate.

Winter Fireworks and Building Lighting Ceremony

Friday, 4 to 7 p.m.
Justin Herman Plaza

An annual tradition that marks the start of the city’s holiday season, this year’s Lighting Ceremony festivities begin at 4 p.m. with a family-friendly carnival. Then it’s a special presentation of Disney On Ice at the holiday ice rink at Justin Herman Plaza, After the free Disney show, a countdown will lead to the illumination of the four iconic buildings of the Embarcadero Center by over 17,000 holiday lights followed by a fireworks display that will light up the night sky even more.

How to Get There on Muni: Celebrate the official start of the holidays by taking any Muni Metro line to Embarcadero station, the F Market and Wharves or E Embarcadero historic streetcar lines, any Market Street bus route as well as the 1 California, 14 Mission or 14R Mission Rapid routes.

Muni Service Notes: There are no planned service changes for this event, however, routes in the area may experience higher than usual ridership.

Upcoming Holiday Service Schedule and Parking Enforcement Alert:

Thanksgiving Day

On Thanksgiving Day (November 22), Muni will operate on a Sunday schedule.

There will be no enforcement of parking restrictions for:

  • Seven-day street sweeping;
  • Parking meters (including those meters on Port of San Francisco property);
  • Residential parking permits;
  • Monday through Friday street sweeping;

New Canopies Being Installed Along Market Street

New Canopies Being Installed Along Market Street
By Benjamin Barnett

New canopies going in along Market Street.

BART in partnership with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency have opened the first two canopies above the Market St. entrances. One of the pilot canopies is located above Powell St. Station and the other above Civic Center Station. Twenty-two additional canopies will be constructed above all of the remaining street-level entrances at the Embarcadero, Montgomery, Powell and Civic Center Stations. They will be built in conjunction with another project that will replace 41 escalators serving the same four stations.

The canopies will protect the new escalators from the wear-and-tear of elements like rain and wind-swept debris. They will also provide an added layer of station security and cleanliness through motorized gates that allow the entrances to be locked at the street level when stations are closed. Each canopy will also include a real-time digital display that shows train arrival times, LED lighting and security cameras.

New digital signs at the Powell Street Station.

Since the 2015 opening of the 19th St. Station canopy in Oakland, escalator downtime has been cut by 30 percent. We anticipate similar improvement to escalator performance in downtown SF when the Canopy/Escalator Replacements are completed.

Contracts partially funded through voter-approved Measure RR bond money will be awarded in 2019 to build additional canopies above all of the remaining 22 BART and SFMTA entrances above the four downtown San Francisco stations.

27 Bryant Project Proposes Improvements to Route

27 Bryant Project Proposes Improvements to Route
By Bonnie Jean von Krogh

27 Bryant going through the Tenderloin.

At the May Sunday Streets event in the Tenderloin, residents shared their experiences with the 27 Bryant bus line and how it serves them. We put together a short video of what they had to say.

The 27 Bryant serves 6,700 riders each weekday and connects the Tenderloin, Nob Hill, SoMa and the Mission neighborhoods. This serves diverse populations, including seniors, people with disabilities, and multicultural communities that depend on it to commute to work and connect to other transit lines. It is also a neighborhood lifeline that many use to reach grocery stores, hospitals, schools, senior centers and more.

Although it is an important north-south connection, it is one of Muni’s ten slowest lines. The buses often get delayed as they wind their way through the Tenderloin and Nob Hill. The 27 Bryant Project focuses on improving the line north of Market Street where most of the delays occur.

With input from more than 500 Muni customers, 80 merchants along the route and local community organizations, the 27 Bryant Project has developed proposed improvements to the line. To reduce delays and improve reliability, improvements include a route adjustment, wider sidewalks at bus stops for easy boarding and bus stop location changes. Upgrading signals, installing high-visibility crosswalks and extending sidewalks at corners are proposed to make it safer for people walking.

27 Bryant Project Open House

Saturday, November 10, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.
Boeddeker Park Clubhouse
Nearby Muni Routes: 5, 19, 27, 31, 38, Powell Station.

Community members can view the project proposals and provide feedback at an upcoming open house this Saturday.  Following the event, the proposed improvements will be available to view online as well.

The 27 Bryant was identified as a priority line in the Muni Service Equity Strategy, a neighborhood-based approach to improving the transit lines most important to households with low incomes, people of color, seniors and people with disabilities. Improving the reliability of the 27 Bryant and safety for people walking is critical to better serving the Tenderloin, SoMa and Mission communities.

Show HN: Empirical Eye – Bring ML+AI to the Physical World https://ift.tt/2FoDCyv

Show HN: Empirical Eye – Bring ML+AI to the Physical World Hi HN, Our startup just released a sensor+computer module called the Empirical Eye. It's basically a stereo vision system + on-board embedded CPU+GPU + WiFi (plus some mounting straps). Internally there is also an IMU sensor, and the ability to attach others via GPIO pins. The Eye is meant to be easily attached to physical machines, to collect and stream data, and enable novel machine learning applications (and one day: control those machines!). The goal with this device is to bring ML/AI to the physical world. We've made our own "visual quality control" software with the device. We're doing a device giveaway to developers for feedback and troubleshooting, which will help us refine it. We'd love to send some out to the HN crowd (quantities limited to about 75), and get your feedback and see what you build! We want to make life easier for running ML experiments and developing new applications. The primary motivation has been the field of robotics, but we see it as a flexible module that can be attached to any number of devices or machines, so feel free to be creative :) We're looking to do another production run in a month or so, with a cleaner industrial design that'll look a bit more professional. Upon delivery you'll get the device's software API. It's a Linux OS not that different from a Raspberry Pi OS, and we have basic data collection + streaming scripts written in Python for your convenience. If you're interested, definitely check out the site and sign up for a free device. Let us know what you want to develop, and ideally a quick one-liner describing your background experience. https://ift.tt/2usDNjw Happy to answer any questions, cheers! November 9, 2018 at 03:59AM

Veterans Day Parade

Sunday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Fisherman's Wharf

This Sunday will be a chance for the City to salute America's veterans during the annual Veteran's Day Parade at Fisherman's Wharf. The parade will begin at North Point Street and the Embarcadero, traveling along the Embarcadero before turning west onto Jefferson where the parade will conclude on the last block of Jefferson. This year, the parade will be a historic event because it is the 100th Anniversary of the ending of World War One, which ended on November 11, 1918, on the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Because of the importance of this historic event, the United States has made this a National Centennial Commemoration.

How to Get There on Muni: Riders can take the E Embarcadero or F Market and Wharves Lines as well as the 8 Bayshore, 39 Coit, or 47 Van Ness routes close to the start of the parade.

Muni Service Notes: The E, F, 8, 39, and 47 will have reroutes and may see crowding due to possibly increased ridership.

Diwali Festival Fireworks

Sunday, 12 to 9 p.m.
Pier 39

Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights which is celebrated every autumn in the northern hemisphere. One of the most popular festivals of Hinduism, Diwali symbolizes the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. During the celebration, temples, homes, shops and office buildings are brightly illuminated. What better way to celebrate the festival of lights than with family and friends at a fireworks show that’ll illuminate the sky over the bay? Head over to Pier 39 this Sunday for the Diwali Festival Fireworks featuring rickshaw rides, teacup rides, henna tattooing with the fireworks show beginning at 7 p.m..

How to Get There on Muni: Head towards the pier via the F Market and Wharves or E Embarcadero streetcar lines, the 8 Bayshore, 19 Polk, 28 19th Avenue, 30 Stockton, 39 Coit, 47 Van Ness or the 49 Van Ness/Mission routes.

Muni Service Notes: There are no planned service changes for this event, however, routes in the area may experience minor delays or heavier than usual ridership, especially near the event location.

UCSF Mission Bay Platform Project

UCSF Mission Bay Platform Project
By Erin McMillan

Passengers loading on a T train.

The SFMTA is replacing the existing UCSF Mission Bay platforms along 3rd Street between South and 16th streets. This new, larger center platform will service inbound and outbound trains and greatly expand transit capacity in preparation for neighborhood growth and the new Chase Center. The two existing platforms, which are split as separate inbound and outbound, will be demolished as part of the project. The new and improved platform’s greater size will enable four, two-car trains to load simultaneously during larger events. When needed, the platform will also allow for trains to depart inbound from both sides of the platform to connect customers quickly to BART, CalTrain and eventually the Central Subway.

Construction elements included in the project:

  • Remove the two existing platforms at 3rd and South streets
  • Build a new center island platform

  • Widen the track to accommodate the new island platform

  • Install new overhead wires that power trains

  • Update utility lines and street lights to support the new center island platform

  • Upgrade the traffic signals at 3rd and South streets as well as 3rd Street and Campus lane

The UCSF Mission Bay Platform will be closed November 12, 2018 through late April 2019. Please use Mission Rock and Mariposa stations as an alternative while the T Third train is in service.

To accommodate construction work on the platform and train tracks, the T Third will be bus substituted on the following dates: November 25; from November 30 to December 3; and from January 4 to late February.

T Third Bus Substitution

T Third line will be served by buses from Embarcadero to the terminal at Bayshore Blvd. and Sunnydale Ave. Sunday, November 25, the weekend of November 30 to December 3, and Friday, November 30 through late February (see schedule below). All Muni train stations between Embarcadero to the terminal at Bayshore Blvd. and Sunnydale Ave. will be closed and buses will service all stops curbside along 3rd Street. Look for signs indicating where to board.

During these bus substitutions, those traveling underground on Muni Metro towards Bayshore Blvd. and Sunnydale Ave. will transfer to a T Third bus at Embarcadero. Please watch for signs that will direct you to T Third bus.
