Celebrate Muni's Birthday with 75 Years of Historic Photos!
By Jeremy Menzies
We're celebrating Muni's 106th birthday today with a special present for all you history buffs out there. The SFMTA Photo Archive staff have now digitized and published online 75 consecutive years of transit history! Now you can search, browse and view over 20,000 photos taken between 1903 and 1978.
Here's a quick trip back in time to sample some of the many photos we've made available. These shots come from four of the main photographers whose work makes up the bulk of this 75-year period.
A view down Market Street taken in January 1906, just a few months before the 1906 Earthquake and Fire that destroyed every building pictured here. Note that those are cable cars running on Market, not electric streetcars like those running today.
The earliest works we have come from John Henry Mentz, a photographer working for the United Railroads of San Francisco (later Market St. Railway Company). His work spans from 1903 to 1944 and contains many striking street scenes showing the evolution of transit and the city during those 40 years.
Muni's original headquarters is shown in this 1923 photograph. Today the building houses Presidio Division, home of Muni's fleet of 40-foot trolley coaches that serve lines like the 21 Hayes, 3 Jackson, and 1 California.
In 1912, photographer Horace Chaffee, who worked for the Board of Public Works, began photographing the birth of the Municipal Railway. For about 30 years, he made photos of tracks being laid, buildings under construction, and new streetcars and buses purchased for the city's transit provider. In addition to all of our Muni shots by Chaffee, an incredible number of his photographs have been digitized by our good friends at the Western Neighborhoods Project and are available on their site OpenSFHistory.org.
This April, 1940 view looks east up Market Street from about 12th Street. Note the four streetcar tracks dominating the center of Market, the center tracks were owned & operated by the Market Street Railway Company and the outer by Muni.
During the 1930s, the city purchased the privately owned Spring Valley Water Company (SVWC) and combined the management of water, sewer, and power utilities plus the Municipal Railway and Airport under the Public Utilities Commission. During consolidation, SVWC photographer George Fanning, continued his employment under the PUC, photographing water and sewer infrastructure as well as Muni scenes from about 1932-1945. Taken on large, 8x10" negatives, his photographs hold incredible detail and clarity.
Taken outside the Cable Car powerhouse and barn on Washington and Mason Streets in 1965, this scene could almost be mistaken for present day, with a timeless Cable Car rolling past full of passengers.
In 1945, photographer Marshall Moxom began his 33-year career at the PUC shooting Muni, Water, and Airport scenes. While most previous photographers mainly took documentary shots of equipment, construction, and streets, with the occasional formal portrait or posed group photo, Moxom's work expanded the range of subjects exponentially. Employees receiving awards, internal parties, public events, portraits, and promotional shots became routine subjects, in addition to documentation similar to his predecessors.
Wrapping this set up is a great 1977 shot of a Muni driver dressed as Santa Claus waving from the steps of a Flyer trolley coach signed for the 21 Hayes route.
These 75 years of photos represent a major span of time covered by our photo collections, which range from 1903 to present day. The work to scan, catalogue, and make publicly available is just part of our ongoing mission to preserve and archive the over 100,000 images in our files. Initial funding for this work was provided through generous grants from the Historic Preservation Fund Committee.
We hope you enjoyed this sampling. Check out the full set of photos at the SFMTA Photo Archive website and follow us on Instagram for even more.

Season's Greetings and Schedule
By Kristen Holland
As the festive season is now upon us and the new year is fast approaching, we wish you and yours a festive and safe holiday.
In 2018 we realized some significant milestones, from expanding our light-rail fleet to delivering 70 miles of safer streets. And we continue to work on implementing improvements to our service.
Our blog strives to help you get the information you need to be involved and to make your voices heard. Each year, we take this opportunity to thank our readers and commenters for their support. Thank you!
Over the next couple of weeks, Moving SF will publish on a lighter schedule. Muni will also adjust its schedule around the Christmas and New Year holidays.
Christmas and New Year's days are two of the three days of the year when meters are not enforced. (The third is Thanksgiving Day.) Note: parking meters and seven-day street sweeping restrictions will be enforced on Monday, Dec. 24 and Monday, Dec. 31. For further information on the holiday parking enforcement schedule, please check the SFMTA holiday parking enforcement page and the Port of San Francisco website.
Don’t forget, Muni wants to be your New Year’s Eve designated driver. Starting at 8 p.m., Monday, Dec. 31, Muni will be free to get you to or from your NYE revelry.

This Weekend: Holiday Events at the Civic Center
By Schad Dalton
News and Notes for Christmas and New Year’s days:
Service - Muni will operate on a Sunday schedule next Tuesday, Christmas Day, as well as on Tuesday, January 1, New Year’s Day. In addition, Muni will provide free New Year’s Eve service beginning at 8 p.m. on Monday, December 31 running until 5 a.m. the next morning (details to follow). Remember not to tag your Clipper card during the complimentary service period or your card will be charged the regular fare.
Holiday Enforcement - On both Christmas and New Year’s days there will be no enforcement of seven-day street sweeping, residential permits, Monday through Friday street sweeping, commuter tow away or parking meters, including those meters on Port of San Francisco property. Visit the Holiday Parking Enforcement Schedule page for details.
It will be a quiet weekend around the City as residents prepare for the upcoming holiday festivities with their friends and families. However, there will still be some fun to be had this Saturday in the Mid-Market area, which you can read more about below.
It's a quiet pre-holiday weekend, but there will still be some entertainment to be found at the Civic Center. Photo: Stephen Kelly/Flickr
Russian Holiday Bell Concert
Saturday, 12 to 2 p.m.
Civic Center
The main branch of the San Francisco Public Library will be hosting a Russian Holiday Bell Concert event featuring the majestic sound of Russian bells. San Francisco Symphony’s extraordinary guest percussionist, Victor Avdienko, will play a peal of six Traditional Russian Bells, accompanied by two bass Russian Flat Bells, known as "bila". The program will consist of several traditional bell chimes, some contemporary pieces as well as some improvisational work.
How to Get There on Muni: Riders may take any Muni Metro Line to Civic Center Station, the F Market and Wharves Line, as well as the 5 Fulton, 6 Haight/Parnassus, 7 Haight/Noriega, 9 San Bruno, 14 Mission, 14R Mission Rapid, 19 Polk, 21 Hayes, 47 Van Ness or the 49 Van Ness/Mission routes to near the event location.
Muni Service Notes: There are no planned service changes for this event.
Remember that you can take Muni for the entire day for a single $5 fare. The new $5 Day Pass, available on MuniMobile®, is part of Muni’s recent fare changes. The pass is intended to encourage a safe, convenient way to pay your fare and quickly board Muni vehicles, which reduces overall travel time for everyone. The $5 Day Pass is Muni bus, rail and historic streetcars only.
“On Tap” gives you a heads up about the big events in town and what Muni routes and lines will get you to the party. Look for this feature to be posted usually on Thursdays for a look ahead to the weekend. Check out our Weekend Traffic & Transit Advisory for more details.

SF Earns Top Marks from National Geographic for Biking
By Lori Phelan
Not to drop names or anything but National Geographic just named San Francisco as one of the top 10 cities in the world for getting around by bicycle.
When judged on infrastructure such as bike lanes, rentals, airport accessibility, biker friendliness (from both drivers and pedestrians) and visual appeal, San Francisco was the only U.S. city to make the list of best cycling venues in the world. The report noted San Francisco for its iconic views, history, culture and the famously difficult (but worth the effort) hills.
Rounding out the top 10 were: Amsterdam, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Copenhagen, Ljubljana in Slovenia, Montreal, Paris, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo. The only other American city noted in the list was Tucson, Arizona, which received an honorable mention.
We are working hard to make biking a safe and easy way to get around our city. San Francisco’s bike network has grown to encompass 448 miles of bikeways, including:
- Class I Bike Paths – 77
- Class II Bike Lanes – 139
- Class III Bike Routes – 210
- Class IV Separated Bikeways – 22
Check out the article for more information on the best bike cities in the world.

Powering Transit from Bryant Street Since 1894

Hidden in plain sight on the fringes of the South of Market neighborhood is a landmark structure that's served public transit for 124 years but gets little credit. What building? The massive Bryant Street Substation, located on the northeast corner of Bryant and Alameda streets. While it's not the most glamorous building in town, it has played a hugely important role in public transit since day one.
This is an early view of the powerhouse as it looked in January 1904. Note the double smokestacks used to heat water for the steam-powered generators.
Built by the Market Street Railway Company in 1894, this building has gone through several name, ownership and function changes over the decades but has always served as a power facility for public transit. Originally, the building housed large steam engines and generators used to power the company's electric streetcar lines.
It played a critical role after the 1906 Earthquake and Fire, as it survived the disaster intact and thus was back online in a remarkable 17 days. In those early days of reconstruction, it was the only working power generating station in the city, supplying electricity to streetcars as well as the downtown business district.
This photo, taken May 5, 1906, might be the only time a San Francisco mayor has set foot inside the Bryant St. building. Mayor Eugene Schmitz (bearded man at center frame) poses with United Railroad Co. staff and others to celebrate the facility coming back online to provide power to a disaster-ravaged city. Behind the group are massive steam engines, which powered generators much like the one at frame left.
By 1911, the building's equipment had been converted for use as a substation. No longer producing power, the site continued to play a key role in the conversion and distribution of electricity for the overhead line system. Over time as equipment was modernized, more space became available in the building and it served in part as a general storeroom for a number of years.
This January 1920 shot, taken from the roof of the Rainier Brewing Company building across the street, truly shows San Francisco's industrial past. Warehouses, machine shops, safe movers and metal works businesses pepper the landscape amidst freight rail yards.
Shortly after the merger of Muni & Market St. Railway in 1944, the building became home to Muni's Overhead Line Department, a role that it still serves today. In 1978, all substation functions were moved to a newly built facility in an empty part of the lot on Alameda Street.
This November 5, 1951 view shows master Overhead Line Dept. staff working to install new "feeder" power lines on Bryant Street. Note the equally impressive skills of the 47-Potrero trolley coach operator, who is threading his coach through the line trucks like the eye of a needle.
A modern-day view of the building from the southwest corner of Bryant & Alameda shows that it has definitely changed through the years but retains much of its original character.
Looking to the future, plans are afoot to transfer this long-time transit facility over the city's Animal Care & Control department to construct a modern animal care facility within the historic building shell. This move would end a long era of transit service but potentially provide a new life for one of the oldest transit facilities in the city.

Holiday Lighted Boat Parade
Friday, 6 to 8 p.m.
Pier 39
A tradition since 1994, the Lighted Boat Parade has become a holiday staple along the city's northern waterfront. Members from the St. Francis Yacht Club, the Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Fleet, Pier 39 Marina and more join together in a parade of floating festive festoonery featuring holiday-themed decorations and of course, lights galore. Spectators can enjoy the parade views from Aquatic Park on Pier 39 as the boats set sail heading west toward Crissy Field before they return to their respective docks near Pier 39. As a bonus, the Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Fleet will remain lit throughout the entire holiday season.
How to Get There on Muni: Spectators can take the E Embarcadero or F Market and Wharves streetcar lines, the 8 Bayshore, 19 Polk, 22 Fillmore, 28 19th Avenue, 30 Stockton, 39 Coit, 43 Masonic, 47 Van Ness or 49 Van Ness/Mission routes to various points near the north waterfront.
Muni Service Notes: There are no planned service changes for this event.
24 Holidays on 24th Street
Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Noe Valley
Each day this month between December 1 through Christmas Eve (12/24), 24th Street in Noe Valley embraces the holiday spirit with its 24 Holidays on 24th Street event. During this nearly month-long celebration, merchant events and specials will be highlighted along with live entertainment and much more to create a festive atmosphere for the popular retail corridor. This Saturday will provide shoppers with an opportunity to have their photos taken with Rudolph and Santa before they have to head back north to prepare for their busy night on the 25th.
How to Get There on Muni: Riders can take the J Church Line, as well as the 24 Divisadero, or the 36 Eureka routes to the main retail area of 24th Street in Noe Valley.
Muni Service Notes: There are no planned service changes for this event.
Remember that you can take Muni the entire day for a single $5 fare.

Moving on Up, with some M Ocean View Improvements
By Phillip Pierce
Recently, crews finished the final paving along 19th Avenue that officially completed work to improve safety and enhance movements of the M Ocean View. The work occurred in two phases, with track work coordinated with the summer’s Twin Peaks Tunnel Improvements in order to limit disruptions for transit customers.
The project goals were to boost reliability and on-time performance of the M Ocean View through the heavily traveled 19th Avenue corridor, increase pedestrian safety around the Muni track right-of-ways and replace a section of aging track around 19th Avenue and Rossmoor Drive.
Phase 1: Safety and Transit Improvements at 19th Avenue and Junipero Serra Boulevard
This intersection sees a lot of action: Muni trains, pedestrians and traffic. For the M Ocean View, the area is a key crossing on its journey to downtown or Balboa Park Station, but trains were often getting backed-up by cars packing the intersection. The newly installed Transit Signal Priority (TSP) allows a sensor to communicate with the traffic signals when trains are approaching in order to keep the train moving through the intersection more often.
In addition, vehicle deterrents like red concrete and low-profile speed bumps, also called "intrusion treatments," were installed to help people avoid driving on the tracks. This coupled with pedestrian refuges and new crosswalks should help everyone using this busy intersection.
Phase 2: Track replacement between Winston Drive and Rossmoor Drive, pedestrian safety and transit performance improvements
A little farther north, the second phase included replacing the entire section of track between the Stonestown station platform and Rossmoor Drive. Similar to the intersection in Phase 1, new traffic signals and sensors were installed as were intrusion treatments where trains go from 19th Avenue to a dedicated right-of-way. Lastly, three new ADA ramps were installed at the Rossmoor Avenue/19th Avenue intersection along with pedestrian timers and train warning signals.
Let us know what you think of our new improvements to the M Line, send your favorite pictures to @sfmta_muni.

SFMTA Public Meetings December 10 - December 24
By Benjamin Barnett
Potrero Yard Neighborhood Working Group Meeting
Wednesday, December 12, 6:00 p.m.
Potrero Yard
Nearby Muni Routes: 9, 22, 27, 33, 55
Our Muni yards are critical infrastructure that support San Francisco’s transit. Every year, people board our vehicles 200 million times. Every vehicle that provides that service starts and ends its day in a Muni yard. These yards are critical to supporting the city’s economy, emergency response and environment. But many of our major Muni Yards are over 100 years old. At our workshops last week, members of the public gave feedback to help the SFMTA build a new modern Potrero Yard. Members of the Potrero Yard Neighborhood Working Group will discuss the public feedback with the staff.
This is an active Muni yard, all visitors must be escorted. Staff will meet visitors at the entrance to the yard.
Board of Directors Meeting
Tuesday, December 18, 1 p.m.
City Hall, Room 400
Nearby Muni Routes: 5, 19, 21, 47, 49, F Market, Civic Center Station
The SFMTA Board of Directors provides policy oversight for the safe and efficient transportation of goods and service in San Francisco. This includes the San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni), automobiles and trucks, taxis, bicycling and walking. The SFMTA Board of Directors also serves as members of the San Francisco Parking Authority.
Our board of directors meetings are held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The agenda has not yet been posted on the board’s webpage.
Our Meeting Round-Up feature highlights different SFMTA public meetings that will be held within the coming two weeks. These meetings give you the chance to share your ideas and provide us with helpful feedback. Join us at our next meeting to learn more about SF's changing and complex transportation system.
Those listed above are just a few highlights. You can find a full list of upcoming meetings to keep up to date on your favorite SFMTA committees.

Parol Light Festival
Saturday, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
South of Market
The parol lantern is the quintessential Filipino symbol of hope, blessings, luck and peace during the holiday season. Such lanterns can be found lighting up windows in Filipino homes throughout the world. This Saturday's 16th annual Parol Festival in Jessie Square in SoMa is not just a celebration, but also a reflection of history in the area which has long been a site of resistance against community displacement. It is a reminder of the community’s strength and the ways it has continued to rise up. This year’s theme will honor the resilience of leaders, artists, youth, student groups and especially families who have faced political and economic challenges for decades in San Francisco and the Bay Area. The festival features a parol lantern parade, a gallery of handmade parols, with live music and dance performances.
How to Get There on Muni: Riders may utilize any Muni Metro Line to Powell Station, the F Market and Wharves Line, any Market Street bus route as well as the 8 Bayshore, 10 Townsend, 12 Folsom/Pacific, 14 Mission, 14R Mission Rapid, 27 Bryant, 30 Stockton, or the 45 Union/Stockton routes to the event near Yerba Buena Gardens.
Muni Service Notes: There are no planned service changes for this event though routes to the area may see increased ridership.
Remember that you can take Muni the entire day for a single $5 fare. The new $5 Day Pass, available on MuniMobile®, is part of Muni’s recent fare changes.
