Stockton Reopens to Traffic

Stockton Reopens to Traffic
By Erica Kato

Open Stockton Street

We are excited to announce the reopening of Stockton Street between Jackson and Clay Streets. This segment of Stockton Street will reopen to vehicular traffic and provide more space for pedestrians after a three-year partial closure due to Central Subway construction. This street segment runs directly from Union Square to Chinatown and is the main thoroughfare for merchants, residents and tourists in the city.

In July, the SFMTA hired Nadeem Tahir to oversee the project as the Central Subway Program Director. His focus is on delivering the final stages of this historic project to improve public transportation in some of the city’s most densely populated areas. Nadeem is currently evaluating all aspects of the project and assessing the project’s timeline. One of his top priorities this summer was to restore traffic lanes, parking and sidewalks for the community in Chinatown and Union Square.

Once construction on the project is completed, we will begin testing to ensure that the tracks and other systems are fully integrated with the Muni system and ready for service. This includes integrating the automatic train control systems, radio and data communication systems, overhead lines and customer information systems, ensuring that all the Central Subway extension is fully integrated into the rest of the Muni Metro subway system. Across the industry, it typically takes a minimum of six months to a year to test and integrate similar systems.

Once in operation, the Central Subway will cut travel times in half along congested Stockton Street and 4th Street while enhancing connections to BART, Muni Metro and Caltrain. The route will move along 4th Street, through a tunnel near Harrison Street, beneath Market Street and under Stockton Street to the intersection of Stockton and Washington streets. With stops in SoMa, Yerba Buena/Moscone Center, Union Square and Chinatown, Central Subway will vastly improve transit access for the residents in areas of the city with limited transportation options.

The Central Subway will directly serve some of San Francisco’s most densely populated communities including Visitacion Valley in the southeast, the Bayview and Dogpatch neighborhoods, and the city’s center. Here is more information about the Central Subway.

Practice Makes Perfect!

Practice Makes Perfect!
By Benjamin Barnett

Parking Control Officers conducting drills

Practice makes perfect! That's right, we are talking about practice. Over the last month, we have been conducting dry runs to make sure things go smoothly when Chase Center officially opens next week. We need to move thousands of people in and out of the area surrounding the new arena.

Our Parking Control Officers have been conducting drills to simulate what traffic flow will be like when 16th Street and Warriors Way will both be closed to vehicle traffic during events. These dry runs are a big help to coordinate between light-rail, bus shuttles, bike, pedestrian and car traffic to make sure everything comes together to get people to and from Chase Center. Up to 26 Parking Control Officers will be in the area, focused on transit priority, traffic control, safety, parking and curb enforcement. Remember, Muni is still the best way to get there and your event ticket is your Muni fare.

Things to remember:

  • Get there early to avoid last-minute crowds.
  • Look out for incoming trains when you are on the platform.
  • Don't cross the yellow line, stay back from the edge.
  • Obey Parking Control Officers, they are there to keep you safe.
  • Don't cross the street illegally.
  • Exit the platform at the designated exit, do not jump off midway, it is illegal.

78X and 79X practicing pick ups at Chase Center

The new Route 78X 16th Street Arena Express bus service will run from 16th and Mission Streets and the new Route 79X Van Ness Arena Express will run from existing route 47/49 bus stops along the Van Ness Corridor. Route 78X and 79X buses will begin running approximately 2.5 hours before the start of any Chase Center event and for 30 minutes after events. After events, both routes will drop off at 16th and Mission BART station. Route 78X will return to Chase Center for additional trips. Route 79X will continue, making local stops on Van Ness, beginning at Market Street and continuing to North Point. These new routes will improve arrivals and departures from each Chase Center event.

Remember, there are no stopping zones throughout the area to ensure that traffic can move smoothly. Please be aware of appropriate locations to pick up and drop off. Third Street northbound will be also closed after events for the block adjacent to Chase Center. Please sign up for our Chase Center GovDelivery alerts to stay informed.

This Weekend: Presidio Picnic

This Weekend: Presidio Picnic
By Schad Dalton

Events: It's an unusually quiet weekend ahead in terms of major events around the city, but that doesn't mean there's any shortage of fun activities to be found. Catch the second half of a four-game series as the Giants finish out their current home stand against the San Diego Padres on Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday, check out the San Francisco Zine Fest at the SF County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park, enjoy some of the area's best food truck fare at the Presidio Picnic, or take tours of multiple buildings all around the city during the Architecture and the City Festival which kicks off a month-long event series exploring the city's diverse architecture. Read more about our featured event below.

Presidio Picnic

Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Presidio

Take in views of the bay and Golden Gate Bridge from the Presidio's main parade ground while also filling up on a wide selection of the city's best food truck cuisine at the Presidio Picnic this Sunday. A continuation of the months-long series that began March 31 and concludes for the season on October 20, the Presidio Picnic will feature over 30 vendors of mobile multicultural food and drink. Each Sunday event is a little different and along with the delicious eats, some other notable activities include free yoga classes, lawn games, a photo booth and much more.

How to Get There on Muni: Picnic goers' most direct Muni option to the event is the 43 Masonic Route, though the 28 19th Avenue and 30 Stockton routes will make stops within reasonable walking distance of the event.

Muni Service Notes: There are no planned service changes for this event.

Remember that you can take Muni for the entire day for a single $5 fare. The new $5 Day Pass, available on MuniMobile®, is part of Muni’s recent fare changes. The pass is intended to encourage a safe, convenient way to pay your fare and quickly board Muni vehicles, which reduces overall travel time for everyone. The $5 Day Pass is Muni bus, rail and historic streetcars only.

“On Tap” gives you a heads up about the big events in town and what Muni routes and lines will get you to the party. Look for this feature to be posted usually on Thursdays for a look ahead to the weekend. Check out our Weekend Traffic & Transit Advisory for more details.

Director of Transportation Report: August 20, 2019

Director of Transportation Report: August 20, 2019
By Erica Kato

Riders loading up inside the subway

In this week’s Director’s Report from the SFMTA Board of Directors meeting, Tom Maguire gave the following updates:

Vision Zero:

  • Sadly, there have been more Vision Zero traffic fatalities on San Francisco streets since last reported a month ago on July 16.
  • These tragic and avoidable fatalities illustrate what we already know – that many factors contribute in most severe or fatal collisions, but most importantly when those occupying the same street space are not heeding rules or paying attention, regardless of whether you are in a vehicle or on foot. We all need to take safety seriously, most especially on streets within the High Injury Network where most collisions happen.

Central Subway Update:

  • Our newly appointed Central Subway Program Director, Nadeem Tahir, is in the process of assessing the project budget and timeline and plans to share his findings in the coming weeks. In the meantime, Nadeem is working closely with our contractor Tutor Perini to bring this transformative project to completion.
  • Throughout this process, the project continues to achieve important milestones as we get closer to the end of major construction.
  • Our goal is to restore traffic lanes, parking and sidewalks on Stockton Street in Chinatown and Union Square in the coming weeks and to reduce the work zones near Union Square and the Yerba Buena/Moscone Station later this fall.

Early Muni Subway Closures for Critical Maintenance:

  • To keep Muni trains running safely and reliably through the subway, crews work every night within a two-hour window to maintain the tracks and infrastructure.
  • However, critical maintenance work cannot be completed in two hours. Muni needs two weeks of early subway closures, to give crews extra hours each night to do this vital work.
  • The work will include maintenance on the overhead lines, tracks and the automated train control system, which tracks the location and speed of trains in the subway.

Launch HN: Coursedog (YC W19) – Resource Planning Software for Higher Ed https://ift.tt/2ZuxMQT

Launch HN: Coursedog (YC W19) – Resource Planning Software for Higher Ed Hi HN! I’m Justin Wenig, a co-founder of Coursedog ( https://ift.tt/2U6D1oL ). We build enterprise resource-planning software for higher education, starting with schedule and curriculum planning. As of today, 40 universities such as Columbia and BYU use our platform to build their class schedule, manage degree programs and publish the catalog to students. My co-founder Nick Diao and I were CS majors at Columbia. We were motivated but mediocre students, skipping class and constantly building sorta-used not-product-market-fit apps that never took off. During our Junior year, we realized how difficult it was to register for the CS classes we wanted to take, and had the unspecific but weirdly prescient lightbulb moment that all university students have where they say "wow university software sucks". We reached out to Columbia University's IT department and learned that most universities build their schedules with a combination of excel spreadsheets, manual horse/brain/caffeine-power and SQL reports to clean up inevitable errors. It seemed like an obvious opportunity to take a swing at a business. We spent that summer working out of a sweaty lounge at Columbia, awkwardly cold-calling University Registrars and building a Vue/Node web app to help universities optimize their class schedules. We utilized a mixed integer programming algorithm to optimize time and room assignments based on student + faculty preferences and space constraints, and reluctantly built a user interface for manual edits when university politics inevitably messed up our Moneyball-esque optimization. And we had bugs. Luckily for us, compared to the existing on-prem solutions and excel spreadsheets that could make the most dedicated investment banker blush, 40+ universities tolerated us enough to buy our $150K+ multi-year contract solution within a year and a half. Although we’re focused on schedule and curriculum planning for now, it turns out that all higher education administration software is sort of very bad. Fun fact: There are 5 universities in the country on a cloud based enterprise resource planing solution. 5. As such, we feel pretty good about going down the line and rebuilding the whole thing from scratch: registration, advising, financials, all of it. That's the long-term vision. If you might want to work on something like that, please get in touch. We're hiring for the long term, but also right now 30 schools call us at all hours of the night, we launched 4 products this year and will be launching another 4 next year, and we could use engineers with brains that are more developed than ours. Nick and I would like your feedback on all of the above, are happy to answer questions, and look forward to hearing about your experiences and ideas to improve university software. Fire away HN! Next Stop: SFMTA Partners with Hunters Point Family and BAYCAT to Capture Youth Experiences with Transportation in the Bayview.

As a part of youth engagement for the Bayview Community Based Transportation Plan, SFMTA helped facilitate a collaboration between Hunters Point Family’s GIRLS2000 program and BAYCAT Academy to encourage youth to “sound off” on transportation challenges in their communities. The project, entitled Next Stop: GIRLS2000 + SFMTA, was youth-led from beginning to end.

Over the course of three months, students from BAYCAT Academy and GIRLS2000 worked together to produce the short documentary – taking the lead from inception to production. The youth voice is commonly overlooked in the planning process, although they are some of the most vulnerable to transportation changes. This partnership, spearheaded by Hunters Point Family, provided a platform for youth to voice their desires for transportation improvements in their community. Through the film, students advocated for improved access to transit and safety on Muni. They also provide a call to action to their peers, encouraging them to reach out to government leaders or organize at school to help prioritize transportation needs for youth in the City.

Students from GIRLS2000 also participated in a curriculum designed for the Bayview CBTP to expose youth to careers in transportation engineering and planning. They had the opportunity to conduct outreach, participate in a youth transportation workshop and visit the SFMTA to sit on a special youth panel! We are especially grateful to Roslyn Bell from Hunters Point Family and GIRLS2000. The students offered invaluable insight, wit, and much laughter to the Bayview Community Based Transportation Plan.

Here is more information about the Bayview Community Based Transportation Plan.

Launch HN: Memfault (YC W19) – Crashlytics for Firmware https://ift.tt/2NxGQlB

Launch HN: Memfault (YC W19) – Crashlytics for Firmware Hi everyone! We're Chris, François, and Tyler, founders of Memfault ( https://memfault.com ). Memfault helps firmware teams find and fix issues before customers start calling (or worse, tweeting!) by providing a small <3kB SDK to include in the firmware and a web dashboard to manage releases, monitor devices, and view crashes. In the software world, Crashlytics, Sentry, and other error monitoring systems have been offering similar solutions for years. Memfault is the first such solution for firmware. Embedded devices today are very different from ones built 10 years ago. Then, a device would run a small piece of firmware in a while() loop, capture input, compute some logic, write to a small 7-segment display, and that was about it. Today, new products have a wireless connection to the internet, a bright 320x320 full color LCD, a high quality microphone and speaker for Alexa integration, and sometimes even run machine learning or computer vision algorithms on device! Building hardware products in 2019 is a significant software project, it requires software tools. The three of us met at Pebble in 2013, where we shipped 4 watches together. Chris and Tyler went on to work at Fitbit, while François went to Oculus. Each time, we found ourselves building all of our tools from scratch which slowed us down tremendously. Imagine having to build a log collection solution every time you want to build a new web app! As a result of the effort required to build them, the tools available to firmware engineers are not up to the task. For example, the state of the art in debugging requires connecting a physical debugger to your board. To investigate an error report from the field, customers must be contacted, devices shipped back, and enclosures disassembled. By the time this is all done, flash logs have rolled over, variables have reset, and developers are left scraping together raw data from flash to debug the issue. It can take weeks to get to the bottom of an issue that would be root caused in minutes with reasonable tools. We've long wanted to show people what Memfault can do without the hurdle of integrating our SDK into their code. Today, we are launching a zero code, try-it-at-your-desk version of our tool available at https://memfault.com (click on the "Try Memfault" button"). In about 5 minutes, you should be able to connect a ARM Cortex-M based development board and upload an error report using a GDB script. If you do not have a board, you'll be able to interact with an example error report. We could go in at length about the implementations (ask us questions in the comments!). One thing we're especially proud of is the "Globals & Statics" tab which lets you query the state of any static or global variable in your system. To get this to work, we cross compiled libdwarf to wasm via emscripten and used it to implement parts of an in-browser debugger which can be used to look up values for a known symbol given an elf file and a Memfault core file. We'd love to hear what you think, and find out what other tools you've found helpful in this space. Looking forward to the discussion! August 26, 2019 at 11:59PM

Page Street Bikeway Improvements Pilot Open House

Page Street Bikeway Improvements Pilot Open House
By

Page Street bike lane

We are always looking for ways to make our streets safer and input from the community is a big help. Please join us and bring your ideas and concerns to our open house this coming Tuesday, August 27, at John Muir Elementary.

Few neighborhoods outside of downtown are more familiar with traffic woes than Hayes Valley and the Lower Haight, where a seemingly endless stream of vehicles line up to enter and exit Octavia Boulevard and the Central Freeway from all angles. Rideshare stickers also abound, circling to and from the vibrant Hayes Street corridor or heading to crosstown destinations. While the Oak and Fell arterial streets have long carried thousands of cars (well before the Central Freeway came down), such was not the case for parallel residential streets like Page and Haight streets until much more recently.

Page Street is an important corridor for the Hayes Valley / Lower Haight neighborhoods because of its connectivity to John Muir Elementary School, numerous parks and other destinations. It is also one of the most heavily traveled bike routes in the city, where there are often 1.5x more people on bikes than in cars headed downtown in the morning commute. Approximately 20,000 Muni riders also pass through the neighborhood on parallel Haight Street, using several blocks of ‘red carpet’ lanes to (usually) bypass congestion near Octavia Boulevard.

While the SFMTA has made recent changes to improve safety on Page Street, and additional pedestrian improvements are planned for 2020, there remains an obvious need to address more directly the impacts of chronic vehicle congestion and further prioritize non-auto modes of travel. That is why the SFMTA is now proposing a comprehensive 18-month pilot project to try something bold: see what happens when Page Street is no longer an access route for vehicles headed to the Central Freeway.

After years of engagement with neighborhood stakeholders and roadway users, the SFMTA has finalized a proposal for a series of circulation changes and bikeway upgrades to Page Street between Webster and Octavia streets that retain local access but restrict vehicle through-travel. To help ensure eastbound Muni riders are still whisked passed congestion toward downtown, additional changes are proposed on Haight Street between Webster and Buchanan streets.

More information is available on the pilot project webpage.

This Weekend: Bridge to Bridge Run

This Weekend: Bridge to Bridge Run
By Schad Dalton

Events: This weekend's events are as different in character as they are in their locations around the city. Saturday and Sunday in Golden Gate Park, vintage paper aficionados can buy and sell vintage postcards, photographs, posters and much more at the Vintage Paper Fair in the County Fair Building. Dog lovers can head over to Treasure Island TreasureFest and its "Dog Days of Summer" themed-weekend that will feature vendors and activities catering to dogs (and their humans!) Sunday is the 43rd annual Bridge to Bridge Run along the Embarcadero benefiting the Special Olympics of Northern California. Read more about our featured event below.

Bridge to Bridge Run

Sunday, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Embarcadero

Billed as "America's most beautiful run" by Sports Illustrated, the Bridge to Bridge Run certainly lives up to the hype. Participants in both the 5k and 12k variants will set off from the starting line in the shadow of the Bay Bridge on the Embarcadero, proceeding north through Fisherman's Wharf and Ghirardelli Square. Those going the full 12k distance will continue on to Crissy Field where they will be greeted with a panoramic view of the Golden Gate Bridge before they circle back to the Marina Green for a post-race party with music, food and more. The Bridge to Bridge Run benefits the Special Olympics of Northern California.

How to Get There on Muni: Participants can take any Muni Metro line to Embarcadero station, the F Market and Wharves Line, any Market Street bus route, as well as the 1 California, 2 Clement, 14 Mission, or 14R Mission Rapid routes to near the starting line at the Ferry Building.

Muni Service Notes: The F Market and Wharves Line and 39 Coit Route will have reroutes throughout the morning until the conclusion of the event.

New Transit Service to and from Chase Center

New Transit Service to and from Chase Center
By Lori Phelan

Chase Center platform and arena

Wherever you live in the Bay Area, public transit will be the fastest, most reliable and least expensive way to get to Chase Center. Located at the corner of Third and 16th streets in Mission Bay, the 18,064-seat Chase Center will be home to the Golden State Warriors and host to more than 200 concert events and conferences annually beginning Sept. 6.

To help ensure that Chase Center patrons can get to and from events with minimal impact on residents and businesses in the neighborhood, the SFMTA and Chase Center have been working in partnership, planning transit options. Up to 26 Parking Control Officers will be supporting transit in the area, focused on transit priority, traffic control, parking and curb enforcement and safety.

New Muni Service

We are very excited to announce two new express routes that will help get people to and from Chase Center. The new Route 78X 16th Street Arena Express bus service will run from 16th and Mission Streets (same stops as Route 55) and the new Route 79X Van Ness Arena Express will run from existing route 47/49 bus stops along the Van Ness Corridor.

Additional Muni Service

Muni Metro Increased rail service along Third Street and the Embarcadero. UCSF/Chase Center (16th Street) T Third and S Shuttle lines stop is located on Third Street, directly west of Chase Center, and allows for four 2-car trains to load simultaneously and run inbound from both sides of the platform
Muni Buses Regular Bus Service: Routes 55, 48, 22 will run according to their regular schedules.
Muni Owl Service Muni’s Owl service is the late-night and early-morning bus network that serves San Francisco. It is part of regional All-nighter service with additional coverage of the East Bay and Peninsula from approximately midnight to 5 a.m. Route 91 3rd Street/19th Avenue Owl stops at Third Street and Gene Friend Way approximately every 30 minutes.

There are no stopping zones throughout the area to ensure that traffic can move smoothly. Please be aware of appropriate locations to pick up and drop off. Third Street northbound will be also closed after events for the block adjacent to Chase Center. Remember, your event ticket is your Muni fare, so you'll be able to ride Muni all day (excludes cable car). Please sign up for our Chase Center GovDelivery alerts to stay informed.

Show HN: Mead – how I'm pushing back against Medium https://ift.tt/2P541Gc

Show HN: Mead – how I'm pushing back against Medium https://ift.tt/2zdciNA TLDR; Mead is a special case static site generator that automates the process of compiling and uploading to your S3 account. Mead is a desktop application that combines the flexibility of static site generators (Jekyll, Hugo, etc) with Medium's ease of publishing. I created Mead because I wanted to write more and the present options put up too many obstacles. Like many others, I don't like the experience Medium offers to readers. Modals and banners distract the user from engaging with the content and in some cases, prevents them entirely. Static site generators are great in terms of their flexibility. They're the only way we can fully control what trackers and advertisements readers are exposed to. However, the writing process is a bit cumbersome. I often forget the commands I need to run, and I'd like to not have to run 3 git commands every time I notice a typo. Mead, at its core, prioritizes simplicity. It was made so I could easily open up an app on my computer, write some text, add an image (automatically uploading to S3), paste in a code snippet, click a button, and have the whole thing public without any other effort. Mead is also an experiment in creating a product that does not need advertisements or trackers to continue existing. My goal here is to fully respect the privacy of others. If I'm failing in some way, please gently point it out and I will make the necessary corrections. If you have any comments, feedback, or feature requests, please feel free to reach out. Van Ness Improvement Project Works to Reduce Delays as Work Zones Shift

Van Ness Improvement Project Works to Reduce Delays as Work Zones Shift
By Kate McCarthy

People crossing Van Ness at a crosswalk

As the second half of the Van Ness Improvement Project’s utility work gets underway, teams are accelerating work and reducing delays. Armed with lessons learned from the first half of the utility work, changes to procedures and increases in staffing, the project team aims to launch San Francisco’s first Bus Rapid Transit service ahead of its projected fall 2021 start date.

Several efforts are helping to expedite the remainder of the Van Ness corridor utility work as teams are using proactive approaches to address conflicts underground when crews find underground conditions aren’t as they appear on drawings. When this happens teams must stop work and deploy its crews to work elsewhere on the corridor while the conflict is identified and addressed. Once the obstruction is identified, either the item is removed from the site or a redesign of the work plan must be done to find a way to work around the obstruction. To address the high number of conflicts, teams are now using ground-penetrating radar to look for changes in density in the soil beneath before work begins. Teams are also using “potholing” to expedite this work, cutting a hole in the roadway to dig below and confirm whether conditions match site drawings. Resequencing work has also allowed construction crews to jump to the next site to keep the project moving forward.

In July, the Van Ness Improvement Project shifted traffic lanes and construction zones for utility work to continue on the opposite side of Van Ness Avenue. Crews continue replacing the 1800s-era water and sewer systems beneath Van Ness, reducing their vulnerability to damage from earthquakes and minimizing potential service outages. Portions of the emergency firefighting water system, that supplies more than 1,200 fire hydrants through San Francisco, is also being overhauled and new street and sidewalk lighting and landscaping is being installed. Projected to finish construction in summer 2021, the contractor is working to continue reducing delays.

Businesses needing assistance during construction with signage, housekeeping, loading zones, technical assistance or any other concerns are encouraged to contact 415-646-2310 or send us an email.

Show HN: A subreddit dedicated to beta-reading (it's naked and will stay naked for at least a week or two) There are stuff like Discord or Scribophile, which can provide good opportunites, but it's such a mess and sometimes it can be frustrating - for both parties. So, r/betareading is meant to become a platform for both parties to meet and exchange freely. I'll have more free time soon to work on the subreddit and promote it. Probably will add guidelines for both writers and beta-readers. Because a writer can name the genre of his text and his length, but beta-readers skills should be categorized and made public: from grammar to pacing or character development, including favorite genres, format, languages spoken fluently and time available. And maybe a wiki afterwards. This has always existed presumably, it's time to make it more formal. For writers I see two advantages: - easier to send your copy to your stranger than maybe to a buddy - a good, well-read and well-trained beta-reader will provide better feedback than your bud For beta-readers I see one advantage: - easier than to lurk Scribophile for a month wondering wth happens over there, or to join Discord and read thousands of pages of Sonic fanfic https://ift.tt/2NlIlDa In the meantime, feel free to join and stick to the one and only rule existing for now; tag your titles with [R] or [BR]! Sam Trans FCX San Francisco

The SFMTA is excited to support SamTrans with their launch of the new Foster City Commuter Express service called Route FCX. It will run every 30 minutes during weekday peaks between Foster City and San Francisco from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. To let customers try out the new service, SamTrans will be offering free rides aboard the FCX August 19-30.

Route FCX will add stops in the Civic Center area and Financial District, major employment hubs for the City. The route will connect to Muni, San Francisco Ferry Building, BART along Market and Embarcadero and AC Transit through the Salesforce Transit Center. The new service is expected to reduce transfers required for customers to complete trips to and from work.

Route FCX is the first of six planned express bus routes to be implemented over the next five years.

Here you can find information on fare and schedules for Route FCX.

Get those Backpacks Packed

Get those Backpacks Packed

Tom Maguire with crossing guards

Today, Mayor Breed joined SFMTA Interim Director Tom Maguire, Supervisor Catherine Stefani, San Francisco Police Chief William Scott and community advocates to remind San Franciscans about the importance of pedestrian and traffic safety, especially with school starting on Monday, August 19. We are working diligently with the school communities to deliver safer streets to our youngest pedestrians From designing and engineering safer streets to deploying more crossing guards at key intersections this year, we are excited to support families actively choosing sustainable modes of transportation to get to and from school safely

Nearly 60,000 young people attending school in the San Francisco Unified School District are within a five-minute walk of a bus stop. And about half of them will be using Muni as their primary mode of transportation.

With the start of the new 2019 school year Monday, the SFMTA offers a variety of programs specifically to address the needs of this unique group of customers – students.

We're making sure students can travel safely and affordably through agency initiatives such as Free Muni for Youth, discounted youth fares, and the Crossing Guards and Muni Transit Assistance programs. We're also teaming up with our city partners, the San Francisco Police Department and the Department of Public Health, to remind parents, students and the public using city streets how to be safe.

School Trippers

Muni has about 29,000 students traveling on an average school day. In response to this high demand, we provide supplemental after-school service on the 24 Divisadero, 29 Sunset, and 44 O'Shaughnessy for a number of schools. Referred to as "school trippers," these added runs begin service at a school once the school day has ended and then merge into the regular bus route. The added benefit is segregating large numbers of students from rival schools, avoiding the potential for conflicts.

Visit Muni Routes of City Schools for a map and schedule for all SFMTA services and find the school and which are the nearest bus routes and rail lines available.

Crossing Guards

The SFMTA is also ramping up its School Crossing Guard Program. While Aug. 19 marks the first day of school students at the Unified School District, it will also be the first day for 15 new school crossing guards. In total, the SFMTA has grown its School Crossing Guard Program to 190 this year, staffing 154 intersections at 106 private and public schools throughout the city.

The primary responsibility of a school crossing guard is to assist students traversing intersections while en route to school or home; across designated crosswalks and according to existing intersection controls. It also comes in handy that many of our crossing guards know English as a second language, with Cantonese being a primary language spoken for many.

We continue to recruit, hire and train new guards. Currently we have eight candidates going through background check and are hopeful they will be joining the team in early September.

Those interested in becoming Crossing Guards are encouraged to apply online through the City's Human Resources Job Opportunities page or contact the Crossing Guard Program at CrossingGuards@sfmta.com for more information.

Muni Transit Assistance Program MTAP

Another way we work to make student travel safer is through the Muni Transit Assistance Program (MTAP). Since launching in 1996, MTAP has provided community-based staff to ride transit lines with high incidences of graffiti and juvenile disturbances and assist with enforcement. Transit Assistants are assigned to ride and monitor various bus lines and schools throughout the city depending on the need, rider count and concerns. They also act as a liaison between SFUSD, nonprofit organizations and School Resource Officers. These 14 individuals are part of the Security, Investigations and Enforcement Division at the agency.

Safe Routes to Schools Movement

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is an international movement in more than 40 countries and all 50 states. They provide an opportunity to make walking and bicycling to school safer and more accessible for children, including those with disabilities, and to increase the number of children who chose to walk and bicycle.

On a broader level, SRTS programs can enhance children's health and well-being, ease traffic congestion near schools, improve air quality, and improve community member's overall quality of life through bringing school transportation activities together to strengthen communications between school community and city planners, public safety and educators.

Our own Safe Routes to School team will be expanding efforts from 30 local elementary schools to serving 103 non-charter, K-12 public schools with outreach and education about how to get to school safely and sustainably.

On the engineering front, SFMTA teams have completed a baseline safety assessment of 103 San Francisco Unified School District schools to develop a better understanding of the state of safety infrastructure around our city schools in order to develop and implement better and new communication modes. Additionally providing:

Pedaling Forward

kids bikes

More and more people in San Francisco, and just not children, see bicycles as more than just a convenient way to get around; it's a necessity. Creating a connected network of safe, low-stress streets for bicycling is crucial to keeping students safe while they bike to school.

Free Muni for low-to-moderate-income students

The Free Muni for Youth Program provides free Muni services for low to moderate-income city youth between the ages of five and 18 (students enrolled in Special Education Services and the English Learner Program are eligible until the age of 22). Since Free Muni for Youth began in March 2013, nearly 38,500 youth have enrolled in the program.

Applications are available for those who have not had time to sign up for the Free Muni for Youth Program and are between the ages 5-18. They can still get a discounted fare of $1.25 when using a Clipper card ($1.50 with cash) to ride on Muni with a valid identification.

A Reminder from the San Francisco Police Department

September is a good time to remember to slow down and pay attention as smaller people will be walking and bicycling to school. Special attention should be given when entering school zones, passing Muni transit stops, or approaching marked or unmarked crossings. Additionally, motorists should be aware that passing a school bus with flashing red lights is prohibited, from either direction, unless on a divided highway, with two or more lanes in each direction. Failure to follow this law could cost you $694.

Other fines include:

  • Speeding – it's a sliding fine from $237 to $489 depending on how much over the speed limit
  • Failure to Yield to Pedestrian in Crosswalk - $237
  • Motor Vehicle in Bicycle Lane - $237

Launch HN: SannTek (YC S19) – Breathalyzer for Cannabis https://ift.tt/2z3PAaC

Launch HN: SannTek (YC S19) – Breathalyzer for Cannabis Hey HN, I'm Noah, co-founder of SannTek ( https://ift.tt/31HfH3l ). We're building a breathalyzer for cannabis. I bet some of you have had the same idea cross your mind that we had: "If we have a breathalyzer for alcohol, why don't we have a breathalyzer for cannabis?" We're nanotechnology engineering alumni from the University of Waterloo. Two factors led into us deciding to pursue this idea: 1. Cannabis was being legalized across Canada and police were completely ill-prepared, so we saw an opportunity to help; 2. the science required to make this device exist was particularly interesting. Alcohol breathalyzers are fundamentally a fuel cell where the alcohol in your breath sample is oxidized, which then produces an electrical current that the device then translates to BAC. For alcohol, this works because of Henry's Law, which says that at any given temperature the ratio between the concentration of alcohol in the blood and that in the alveolar air in the lungs is constant. Cannabis is a very different beast. Not only is it a non-volatile, fat-soluble molecule, but the mechanism in which THC (the psychoactive component of cannabis) appears in your breath isn't super straight forward. Also, it is present in much lower concentrations in the breath compared to alcohol. Whereas a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% (the legal limit in most states) might result in a concentration of 208 ppm of ethanol in the breath, a similarly impairing dose of cannabis results in 0.00001 ppm of the drug in breath. Detecting such a low concentration is difficult, and as a result, cannabis drug use has been detected in a variety of sub-optimal ways. The state of the art is a blood draw, followed by detection of THC at a toxicology laboratory using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. While accurate and well-validated, this approach has several problems. First of all, since THC is fat-soluble it remains in a person's body much longer than alcohol, especially if that person is a frequent user. Frequent users have been known to have detectable THC in their blood one week after beginning abstinence. These people are clearly not impaired all week but could be arrested and charged with a DUI based on many states laws across the US. Interestingly, police have the opposite problem with infrequent users. For most people, the concentration of THC in their system will decay quickly post-consumption. It takes around 2 hours (at best) for a police officer to get a blood draw from a suspect. At this point, many people will no longer have detectable THC in their system. Our device solves both these problems for police. Our breathalyzer uses an ultra-sensitive immunosensor to detect the minute concentration of THC in breath. Breath is the better medium for cannabis testing for several reasons. First of all, THC concentration in breath for both frequent users and infrequent users decays below detectable levels within 3-4 hours post-consumption and we have never detected THC in the baseline for any of our subjects. So our device does not incorrectly identify frequent users as impaired as blood testing can. Secondly, the breath tests can be administered quickly roadside, eliminating the risk of concentration decay seen with blood draws. Our device comes with a reusable analyzer and a single-use disposable cartridge. It costs us $2 to make a cartridge, and police are willing to pay $20 per test. An individual will breathe into the mouthpiece, and our filter system will collect exhaled breath particles (specifically non-VOCs). Currently, we manually "extract" the THC off of the filter into a solvent liquid, but in the future, this will be automated using novel microfluidics. The solvent, with the captured THC, is then transferred to the surface of the sensor- which is an electrochemical immunoassay. When the THC is there, the output signal is different than when the THC is not there (happy to dive further into this in the comments if people are interested). We haven't had enough resources to run any formal trials yet to publish data, but that is changing this year. We've hired a contract research organization, (shout out Curebase), to help us run our very first clinical trial with blood draws. We're going to be looking at the correlation between breath and blood concentrations, at various time intervals after consumption, to validate (or invalidate!) our preliminary in house data. Selling to the police is notoriously difficult, but we're imagining a world where there are one of our devices in every police car in North America. This weekend we exhibited at the IACP DAID and the response from the attendees was great! We have over 30 police departments across North America that have expressed interest in purchasing the device and that number is increasing every day. We're excited to hear all your questions and feedback! I encourage any questions you may have for us :) August 17, 2019 at 12:15AM

Show HN: Get insider info about your offshore software contractor – for free Hi HN, My name is Yura Riphyak and I'm the co-founder of Contractor Intelligence(https://ift.tt/2Z6WSJ7). We help you make a more informed decision when choosing an offshore software development contractor. With demand for software engineers reaching 14 jobs per candidate and CS graduate salaries starting at $120,000, many Bay Area startups consider hiring part or all of their engineering team abroad. Yet outsourcing remains a risky endeavour. Due to the intrinsic conflict of interests (a dev shop maximizes their margin if they manage to sell you their lowest-salary developer for a maximum price), the offshoring industry suffers from the severe adverse selection problem. The dev shops can become very creative in selling you 'lemons'. I personally observed a video interview of a junior developer in Ukraine by a US client, with a senior colleague writing answers on a whiteboard behind the laptop :). I'm from Ukraine, where IT outsourcing contributes to over 3% of GDP. Working for over 10 years in this industry, I have worn both the clients and the service providers shoes - and experienced their distinctive pains myself. As a result in 2017 I co-founded YouTeam (https://youteam.io/)- a platform for building offshore dev teams, that got backed by Y Combinator a year and a half later. Our routine evaluation of service providers includes comprehensive background check, legal due-dil, insider info gathering, and verification of individual devs skills. In total over 400 dev shops and IT consultancies from 32 countries have passed this examination. Yet this still didn't feel like a solid enough step towards "making outsourcing great again". This is why we decided to turn our internal process into something that can be described as 'vetting-as-a-service'. Looking forward to learning your thoughts on Contractor Intelligence and how we can improve it. Thank you! August 16, 2019 at 05:06AM

Show HN: Our Code Stories- Programming Book Publishing/Tutorial Blog Alternative https://ift.tt/2MliVpO

Show HN: Our Code Stories- Programming Book Publishing/Tutorial Blog Alternative You may have seen a few posts lately around the idea of sharing stories about how code develops. I have been working on this too so I thought I would (re)share https://ift.tt/2TB3QRv My feeling is that code is typically written by a single person on a single computer and that others really only get to see the final product. Other devs don't get to learn much from the development process since they aren't around to see it all happen. Pair programming solves this problem but it doesn't scale well. In other words, there are a lot of interesting things to learn during the development process but much of it is left on the cutting room floor. I have created a new medium that allows sw devs to guide viewers through non-trivial code examples. There is a VS Code extension for authors. I am using it primarily as a replacement for traditional programming books, online tutorials, and youtube videos of code demos for the classes that I teach. Viewers can see code evolve and get a narrative commentary from the author while it happens. These are code focused resources which is what I think many learners want. Here is an example of one: https://ift.tt/33BiFIm These work best on a big screen. Use the >> button to quickly move through the code. Here is all of the content I have created so far: https://ift.tt/2TBFPtI I want OCS to be a marketplace where authors go to write 'books' (alternative to O'Reilly or Pragmatic Programmers) or smaller tutorials (alternative to Medium) and where learners can go to get content (alternative to Khan Academy or YouTube). The site allows content creators to charge for their work or make it freely available to all. I'd like to point out a few others that seem to be doing similar things: https://codelines.dev/ https://storytime.dev/ https://scrimba.com/ These are all interesting in their own ways and are worth checking out. Launch HN: Vendr (YC S19) – Buying software so you don’t have to https://ift.tt/2z2GKK6

Launch HN: Vendr (YC S19) – Buying software so you don’t have to Hey HN: I’m Ryan, the founder of Vendr ( https://vendr.com ). We buy and renew software for companies. Why? Because the way it's done now is a pain. Stakeholders, especially engineers, are required to spend unnecessary time with software salespeople. We believe that the buying process should be dictated by the buyer. For example, if you want to procure New Relic, you should be able to do it your way, not the salesperson’s way. Vendr was created so that companies can get the SaaS they need without needing to invest the time to procure. My background is in software sales. Previous to founding Vendr, I was head of enterprise sales for InVision and director of SMB sales for HubSpot, so I've learned how to buy and sell software. I’ve witnessed that many salespeople are really good at wasting customers' time (unnecessary qualification calls, demos, etc). Buying and renewing software is complicated, and even more if you want to get the best deal. We take care of all that and get you the software you need, fast, and at the best possible price. We also handle renewals and are able to reduce the price per seat as a company grows. Vendr is currently buying and renewing software for many fast-growing companies. We are currently working with Canva, GitLab, Brex, Drift, HubSpot, InVision, and others. These companies have hired us to save time and money. And it’s working. For example, in our first 12 months working with InVision, we saved them over $1.5M. Many of our customers are good negotiators, but they’ve realized that spending the cycles is not a good use of their time. Here’s how it works: We are typically hired by the head of finance or engineering. We analyze and organize your current SaaS purchases and renewal dates. You introduce Vendr to your vendors and we manage the procurement process from start to finish—getting you exactly what you need without ever having to pick up the phone. We are integrated into your Slack environment to keep you posted along the way. We make money via a monthly subscription to buy and renew all of the SaaS in your stack. Our subscription fee is based on your company size and ranges from $2k-10k+. Happy to chat directly at ryan@vendr.com. Have you experienced specific issues buying software? How have your experiences been working with software salespeople? We’d love to hear your feedback and ideas, and your experiences! August 16, 2019 at 12:06AM

Show HN: BrowserUp Proxy-Network Traffic Testing for Selenium WebDriver (FOSS) The BrowserUp Proxy is a free tool for web application testing that lets you test and manipulate network traffic. It works well in conjunction with Selenium WebDriver, or with any other browser automation technologies like cypress.io. For example, you can assert that a particular request happened and had a certain response code. Typically it is used to fill gaps in what Selenium WebDriver is able to see and test. Show HN: SmartForms – Form back end as a service Hi guys, my name is Giancarllo and I'm launching a pretty simple service: form backend that notifies you on Email, Telegram or Slack. http://smartforms.dev It's not intended to make tons of money, I made it for my use and I've been using it on some clients websites. It has a pretty generous free-tier and the paid tiers have really fair pricing. This is my first time launching a product, so any feedback is really appreciated! Thanks, guys. There will be cultural dances, songs, arts and crafts, food and much more at this family friendly event.

Sunday Streets SoMa

Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
SoMa

Folsom Street from Essex to 10th will play host to the latest iteration of Sunday Streets this weekend. Explore local businesses, enjoy cuisine from the multitude of area restaurants or simply enjoy a leisurely stroll along Folsom Street as car traffic will be prohibited for the event, opening the area up to pedestrians, cyclists, skateboarders or any other non-automobile based mode of getting around town.

How to Get There on Muni: Riders may take the 8 Bayshore, 9 San Bruno, 10 Townsend, 12 Folsom/Pacific, 19 Polk, 27 Bryant, 30 Stockton, 45 Union/Stockton or the 47 Van Ness routes to near the event along Folsom Street.

Muni Service Notes: The 12 and 27 routes will have reroutes in the area of the event. All other routes may see minor delays and increased ridership.

Launch HN: Dex (YC S19) – personal CRM that reminds you to keep in touch https://ift.tt/2OXc6gd

Launch HN: Dex (YC S19) – personal CRM that reminds you to keep in touch Hi HN! I’m Kevin, founder of Dex ( https://getdex.com/ ). Dex is a personal CRM that reminds you to keep in touch with people you might otherwise forget. I started working on Dex because I felt like I was falling out-of-touch with people I cared about. I wanted to be aware of “how long it had been” and more proactive about maintaining my relationships. Looking to solve this problem, I tried data tools like Airtable, Notion, and Google Sheets. It was easy to setup a sheet to track relationships, but I eventually found these tools difficult to keep up with. I’d end up procrastinating on updating my records and would rarely find the time to revisit them. Dex is a personal CRM that aims to be simple, intuitive, and accessible. To get started, users sign up for a web application that connects with their Google contacts and calendar (and optionally Facebook and LinkedIn data). With this information, Dex suggests people to contact every day. Over time, these suggestions become better as users customize how frequently they’d like to reach out. Dex includes the functionality you might include from a CRM: logging notes, setting reminders, and organizing contacts. A feature which makes Dex unique is a Chrome extension, which allows you to view relationship history and add people without leaving social networking sites like LinkedIn, Messenger, Twitter, and Facebook. Most people realize the value and fulfillment that come from maintaining relationships, but occasionally still fall out of touch due to forgetfulness. Dex helps these people with a system of regular reminders to keep in touch. I’ve noticed many people already have their own ‘system’ for managing relationships, and I’m always interested in hearing about different people think about dealing with staying on top of relationships. I’d also welcome any other feedback about Dex! Feel free to also email me directly at kevin [at] getdex [dot] com. Thanks for your attention! :) August 15, 2019 at 04:02AM

Show HN: Price Oracle for Decentralized Finance Apps https://ift.tt/33BuNJm

Show HN: Price Oracle for Decentralized Finance Apps We built a data feed oracle to write prices on-chain, and it’s live on the Ropsten test network! In Decentralized Finance (Defi), you can build your own financial instruments and you often need an oracle to write off-chain prices onto the blockchain. We built an oracle focused on data feeds because the current options are too expensive and slow for regularly, repeating data. This oracle is designed for price feeds and uses public key encryption to validate the data submitted is accurate. We modeled our oracle off of MakerDao and generalized the design to work with any datafeed. We’re currently maintaining four datasets with ETH/USD, USDT/USD, PAX/USD, and DAI/USD. You can track the prices reported onchain with our dashboard: https://ift.tt/305qELE. Our smart contract is open sourced at https://ift.tt/2YXfMlZ. Check it out and we'd love to get your feedback!
