Extending the 35 Eureka to the Glen Park BART Station attracts new riders!
By Benjamin Barnett

We are always looking for ways to improve service along our routes. Muni Forward aims to make getting around San Francisco more reliable and safer. Through improvements to Muni service and transit projects, Muni Forward makes upgrades where they are needed most to provide better transit service.
Starting in 2016 we extended the 35 Eureka to the Glen Park Bart Station. This does not seem like much unless you've had to walk up that hill every day. We also increased frequency from 30 minutes to 15 minutes for the evening peak. The re-routing of the 35 Eureka was initially identified as part of a public engagement process that resulted in the new route.
Since the changes, we have seen a 38 percent increase in ridership. Average weekday boarding before the change was around 800, now it is at 1100, with evening ridership seeing the highest growth. The MTA was interested in improving bus service to better respond to contemporary needs, and rerouting the 35 was determined to be an improvement to the service for the great majority of riders and stakeholders (saving time, getting passengers closer to desirable destinations, and increasing overall efficiency).
We thank all of our riders for their input and are happy that our new service is being embraced.

Today in History: A Trip Down California Street July 26, 1974
By Jeremy Menzies
Digging into our latest historic photo uploads, we found a roll of 35mm film taken on this day, July 26, in 1974 along the California Street Cable Car Line. Take a trip back in time from Van Ness to the Financial District and soak in these vintage views along the way.

This view looks east towards the Bay Bridge from California near Franklin Street.
Starting off our trip, we look eastward to Nob Hill from about Franklin Street. A tower of the Bay Bridge looms just above the horizon line as a lone cable car crests the hilltop.

Seen at right is the Cable Car Signal Tower, which was built in 1907 after the original 1880s structured burned in the 1906 Earthquake and Fire.
Just over the top of Nob Hill, two cars pass each other near Powell Street amidst the hustle of cars and pedestrians. This tricky intersection is one of two cable crossings in the system. On the southeast corner of the junction stands the cable car signal tower, a small, octagonal building from 1907 that houses the signal operator and equipment to control the crossing of the Powell and California cable lines.

Cable Car 56 climbs Nob Hill in this easterly-looking shot taken near Powell Street.
Just east of the intersection with the Powell Cable Lines, a decorated Cable Car 56 rolls past on an outbound run to Van Ness. This car recently returned to service after a beautiful complete restoration done by the skilled carpenters, machinist, painters and mechanic's working with Muni's Cable Car fleet. Look for it shining like a gem next time you're on the CA Line!

California Street and Grant Avenue is home to Old St. Mary's Cathedral, seen here rising above the cable car, is listed as a California Historic Landmark.
Next stop, Chinatown and Grant Avenue. Seen above is one of the most iconic views along the line-- Old St. Mary's Cathedral at right and the Sing Chong Building, noted for its multi-tiered pagoda roof at left. Old St. Mary's is one of the city's oldest buildings despite being extensively damaged and rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake. Dedicated in 1854, it still stands at its original location.

Cable Car 49 rolls past right-turning auto traffic as it nears the eastern terminal at Market Street.
The end of our journey brings us a view that at first glance, could almost be mistaken for present day. Shot near Front Street, Nob Hill rises skyward in the background while a couplet of Cal Cars wade through midday traffic past the classic SF staple "Taddich Grill".
Check out more of our recently digitized 1970s photos on the Photo Archive website and be sure to follow us on Instagram for more great SFMTA photos.

San Francisco Marathon
Sunday, 5:30 a.m. start time
Embarcadero
It's summertime in the city and that means it is time for the annual San Francisco Marathon. Over 27,500 runners are expected to line up this Sunday morning along the Embarcadero as the sun begins breaking through the fog, just the beginning of a 26.2 mile jog around the city. Beginning at Mission and The Embarcadero, the race will proceed along the waterfront north toward Fisherman's Wharf before turning west through Fort Mason and the Marina. The race will then take participants across the Golden Gate Bridge, then back again as they head south through the Presidio on their way to Golden Gate Park. After traversing the Park, runners will pass through the Haight before making a turn into the Mission, then heading east into Potrero Hill. The final leg of the race puts runners back along the waterfront, around AT&T Park before culminating on The Embarcadero at Folsom Street.
The top three overall men and women in the full marathon will receive a plaque and winners medal, while the top three females and top three males in each age group will be awarded a personalized plaque. The day will also feature two half-marathons,-- one beginning on The Embarcadero and the other kicking off in Golden Gate Park -- and a 5K beginning at 7:45AM on The Embarcadero.
How to Get There on Muni: Get close to the starting line at Mission and The Embarcadero by taking the F Market and Wharves, KJ Ingleside/Church, N Judah, or T Third lines as well as the L Taraval and M Ocean View Bus Shuttles to connect to the subway toward downtown. Bus options include the 1 California, 2 Sutter/Clement, 5 Fulton, 6 Haight/Parnassus, 7 Haight/Noriega, 9 San Bruno, 14 Mission, 14R Mission Rapid, 21 Hayes, 31 Balboa, 38 Geary or 38R Geary Rapid.
Muni Service Notes: There will be reroutes in effect during this event for the 6, 7, 10 Townsend, 22 Fillmore, 24 Divisadero, 28 19th Avenue, 29 Sunset, 33 Ashbury/18th Street, 37 Corbett, 43 Masonic, 44 O'Shaughnessy, 48 Quintara/24th Street, 55 16th Street, as well as the L Taraval and M Ocean View Bus Shuttles. Multiple other routes around the city may experience minor delays as a result of this event.
“On Tap” gives you a heads up about the big events in town and what Muni routes and lines will get you to the party. Look for this feature to be posted usually on Thursdays for a look ahead to the weekend. Check out our Weekend Traffic & Transit Advisory for more details.

VIDEO: Take a Tour of the Construction Inside the Twin Peaks Tunnel
By Erica Kato

We are now halfway through the project and on track to finish on schedule. We want to thank the residents, merchants, and riders for their patience as we complete much-needed upgrades to the century-old Twin Peaks Tunnel. With 100 years of service under its belt, the Twin Peaks Tunnel needs extensive work to its interior to continue to operate safely and reliably for years to come.

The tunnel's infrastructure, including the tracks, walls and drainage systems, must be maintained in a timely manner to keep up with the demands of the Muni system.

Take your own tour with this video and photo round-up of the progress and advancement of the project. Be sure to check out previous blog posts we’ve done on the history of the tunnel, and check out the Rider Guide when trip planning.

VIDEO: MTA Board of Director’s Meeting, DOT Report from July 17, 2018
By Lori Phelan
Here is a synopsis of what was discussed at the July 17th board meeting:
Status of Protected Bike Lanes on Townsend Street and along the Embarcadero

New Protected Bike Lane on 8th Street between Harrison and Townsend. (SFMTA Photo, May 30, 2018)
Both the Townsend Corridor Improvement Project and the Embarcadero Enhancement Project are a couple of highly visible safety endeavors that focus on protected bike lanes and have been in the news of late.
Tom Maguire, the SFMTA's director of sustainable streets, spoke to the project, reiterating that the agency is looking to make meaningful safety improvements on Townsend Street between 4th and 7th before the Transbay Joint Powers Authority constructs the Downtown Extension Project (DTX). The full board supported the measures and many of those in attendance were reassured to learn as much too.
Also discussed was the June 27 hit-and-run pedicab collision that killed Kevin Manning and injured his passengers at the intersection of The Embarcadero and Sansome Street. This agency also discussed plans for protected bike lanes on that thoroughfare as well.
Masonic Avenue Streetscape Project Update
The Masonic Avenue Streetscape Project (between Geary Boulevard and Fell Street) addresses safety issues on one of the city’s High Injury Network streets that accounts for a disproportionate amount of traffic collisions. Construction is anticipated to be complete by mid-August and has been done in partnership with Public Works and the Public Utilities Commission.
Improvements include: a new landscaped median and public plaza, upgraded sewer and water infrastructure, repaving, bus bulb-outs, bike lanes, new trees and sidewalk planters and new pedestrian scale lighting. The project costs $26 million and is primarily funded by the SFMTA revenue bond:
-
- $16.8 million for street safety and beautification
- $8.6 million to upgrade outdated sewer and water infrastructure
- $700 thousand additional funding for repaving
Shared, Powered Scooters

Staff who have been conducting a review of the 12 applications based on the SFMTA’s and San Francisco County Transportation Authority’s Emerging Mobility Guiding Principles of collaboration, safety, transit, congestion, sustainability, equitable access, accountability, labor, disabled access and financial impact will be finalizing their recommendations and documentation in the coming weeks. The agency will then work with the selected operators to finalize and clarify all terms and conditions of the permit, with the goal of issuing final permits in August.
Legislative Update
The initiative to repeal SB 1, which increased the state tax on gasoline and diesel fuel, qualified for the November statewide ballot. San Francisco is scheduled to receive approximately $60 million in formula funds.
On a related note, a taxpayers association has filed a lawsuit against the Bay Area Toll Authority (BATA), challenging the recently approved Regional Measure 3, $3 bridge toll increase in state court, a move that could potentially delay or eliminate the measure. The lawsuit challenges that the toll increase is a tax and not a fee and would therefore require two-thirds voter approval. The measure passed with 55 percent of the vote across the nine Bay Area counties.
Tour buses not allowed outside the "Full House" residence
Commercial vehicles such as tour buses that seat nine or more people are no longer allowed to frequent the Broderick Street house made famous in the 1990s sitcom "Full House."
The move by the board came about after neighbors complained about double parking and congestion outside the Victorian home, causing traffic hazards. The exterior of the Broderick Street house was featured in the original show and in a Netflix reboot in 2016.
Dolores Street Parking Pilot project becomes permanent
Free weekend parking on street medians along Dolores Street are now a permanent thing thanks to yesterday's board vote.
Twin Peaks Tunnel Project and closure update

Construction work on Twin Peaks Tunnel Improvement Project. (SFMTA Photo, July 3, 2018)
Crews have been working around the clock to complete the work on the Twin Peaks Tunnel Improvement Project quickly and safely; the project is still on track to finish on time within the two-month project window. About 50 percent of the seismic retrofit work is complete along with most of the improved drainage system which dates back 100 years. Two of four new track crossovers are installed while track removal and replacement inside the tunnel continues.
The project team has worked hard to make sure merchants have access to loading and have been holding twice a week office hours in West Portal. Customer feedback and lessons learned have been continually incorporated into the plan wherever possible.
The transit service plan continues to perform very well in transporting the tens of thousands of daily customers that normally travel via the KLM lines in Twin Peaks tunnel with travel times becoming much quicker than expected, with some positive comments coming in via 311 and social media
Coordinated passenger support from ambassadors, Proof of Payment staff, station agents, and inspectors at key transfer locations have been critical to guide customers through the first few weeks of the subway shutdown.
Twice monthly the agency's Board of Directors meet at City Hall to discuss and provide policy oversight for safe and efficient transportation in San Francisco in accordance with the city charter and the Transit First Policy.
This seven-member board, appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m. at City Hall, Room 400, unless otherwise noted. Meetings are open to everyone and are streamed live through SFGovTV. Additional information such as agendas, resolutions and legislation passed by the Board can be accessed through our website.
Director Ed Reiskin provides key updates on what our agency is working on to make San Francisco transportation options safe, reliable and equitable.

How to Get There on Muni: Head over to the Bazaar (on Pine Street at Octavia) via the 1 California, 2 Clement, 3 Jackson, 22 Fillmore, 38 Geary or 38R Geary Rapid routes.
Muni Service Notes: There are no planned service changes for this event, however, riders may experience minor delays or higher-than-usual ridership in the area of the event.
“On Tap” gives you a heads up about the big events in town and what Muni routes and lines will get you to the party. Look for this feature to be posted usually on Thursdays for a look ahead to the weekend. Check out our Weekend Traffic & Transit Advisory for more details.

The SFMTA Board of Directors provides policy oversight for the safe and efficient transportation of goods and service in San Francisco. This week, the board will vote to amend the Transportation Code to ban tour buses on a stretch of Broderick Street, review traffic modifications along the L Taraval route, and approve various changes to the SFMTA’s fare policy.
Our board of directors meetings are usually held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The full agenda is posted on the board’s webpage. The meeting can be streamed live on SFGovTV.org.
Valencia Bikeway Improvements Workshop
Thursday, July 19, 6:30 p.m.
Synergy School
Nearby Muni Routes: 12, 14, 27, 36, 48, 49, 67, KJ Ingleside/Church
Valencia serves as a major north-south bike route for those who live, work, visit and travel through the neighborhood. As the street has become more popular, the city has heard increasing community concern about traffic safety and congestion. Ride-hailing services and commercial vehicles are frequently double-parking in the bike lane, posing safety concerns for all who travel on Valencia Street.
The SFMTA is currently undergoing a planning process to better understand biking concerns around traffic safety, curb management and enforcement. Join us at an upcoming workshop to provide your feedback on potential design alternatives, associated tradeoffs and near-term curb management improvements.
Our Meeting Round-Up feature highlights different SFMTA public meetings that will be held within the coming two weeks. These meetings give you the chance to share your ideas and provide us with helpful feedback. Join us at our next meeting to learn more about SF's changing and complex transportation system.
Those listed above are just a few highlights. You can find a full list of upcoming meetings to keep up to date on all the SFMTA committees.
